The Mercer Island High School girls basketball team won the Lake Stevens basketball tournament during the last weekend of May. The team won all five of its games, including a 52-33 win in the championship game.

Boys soccer nets 13 All-KingCo honors

The Islander boys soccer team, which recently placed third at state, finished the season with 13 team members being named to various All-KingCo teams.

The first team will include: Forrest Marowitz, Jed Jacobsen, Matt Johnson, Taylor Ward, Chris Morris and Danny Strome. Second team selections from Mercer Island include: Tyler Ybarra, Nick Ward and Diego Corvaland, and honorable mentions went to: Derek Schulte and Dominic Cristalli. Head coach Steve Newman was named KingCo coach of the year, and midfielder Chris Morris was named player of the year.

Golf team celebrates awards

Members of the Islander girls golf team celebrated awards last week, following the state tournament the weekend before. The team had the highest number of contestants at the state tournament, with five players attending and three making the cut to the second day. In 2004, the team took four players to state. The team also took second at districts, the highest placing since 1998, when the team won the championship.

Individually, Chelsee Saelee was first at KingCo, while teammate Lindsay Chinn was second and Haley Chinn was third. Saelee had a season scoring average of 39.2; Lindsay Chinn’s average was 42.1, and Haley Chinn’s was 43.5. Saelee’s lowest postseason round was at the district tournament, fetching a 69 overall. During the regular season, her lowest 18-hole score was 78. Saelee also earned 11 medalists’ honors this season, while Lindsay Chinn earned 10 in her career at Mercer Island High School. During her four years at MIHS, Lindsay Chinn had 184 pars. Saelee has earned 110 in her two years. Haley Chinn, a freshman, has 71 and teammate Sarah Peterson, a junior, has 33.

Five youth soccer teams head to regional competition

Five soccer teams with Mercer Island residents on the teams qualified to compete in the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Championships in Lancaster, Calif., June 15-21.

The teams — Eastside FC 94 Red-Strom (boys, under 14), Eastside FC 96 Red-Fry/Bunnell (girls, under 12), Eastside FC 91 Red-Lee (boys, under 17), Eastside FC 95 Red-Bialek (girls, under 13) and Eastside FC 90 Red (boys, under 18) — will try their hand against the best teams in the region.
