News round ups of volleyball, girls soccer and football

Volleyball

After cruising past Liberty 3-0 on Monday, Mercer Island’s first-place girls volleyball team beat Mount Si Wednesday 25-22, 25-13 and 25-18. Senior Sarah Lindquist had fourteen kills and ten digs for the Islanders, and sophomore Jemma Yeadon also had fourteen kills to go along with twelve digs and 7 aces.

The win brought the Islanders to 13-0 in KingCo 3A/2A conference play and 14-1 on the year. The KingCo 3A League Volleyball playoffs kick off Thursday, Oct. 31 at Juanita High School.

Girls soccer

Coming off a 1-1 draw to Liberty earlier in the week, the Mercer Island girls soccer team came out firing Thursday to beat Mount Si 2-0.

Hayley Snyder struck first for the Islanders, scoring in the 2nd minute of the game. Sylvie Dornay scored later in the first half with a goal in the 38th minute.

The win brings the Islanders to 7-3-3 in KingCo 3A/2A conference play, a half-game behind Liberty for second place.

Mercer Island finishes its regular season Tuesday at home against first-place Bellevue.

Football

Times were tough for Mercer Island Friday at Mount Si Stadium, as the Wildcats rang in their homecoming beating the Islanders 45-7. The loss brings the Islanders to 4-2 in KingCo3A/2A conference play and 4-3 on the season.

Coming off a 52-13 loss the previous week to Bellevue, the Wildcats stormed out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Senior running back Bailey Takacs scored twice for the Wildcats, while senior quarterback Nick Mitchell rushed and threw for a touchdown.

Junior quarterback Alfonso Gonzalez started the game for the Islanders, playing through injury before sophomore Anthony Scalzo took over in the third quarter. Junior running back Jack Vassau put the Islanders on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, running in a 7-yard touchdown.

The Islanders travel to Bellevue Friday to face the undefeated Wolverines for the team’s final game of the regular season.
