Kyle Sterling MIHS grad, USC water polo win title

Kyle Sterling, a Mercer Island High School graduate and current member of the University of Southern California water polo team, was a part of the NCAA water polo championship team as USC beat Princeton during the first weekend of December. It was the Trojans’ second consecutive title.

During the tournament, another MIHS alum, Charlie Horton, who graduated in 2007, participated with the Loyola Marymount team, losing to UCLA in the semifinal game after two overtimes.

Local youth competes in national cross country event

Aliya Schenck, a 9-year-old Mercer Island fourth-grader, participated in the National Cross Country Junior Olympic championships last weekend in Reno, Nev., taking on the 3,000-meter race. Schenck, who is a member of the Cascade Striders, a Bellevue running club, finished in 48th place with a time of 13:27. She is also a member of the Shooting Stars soccer team, coached by her father, Luke.
