A Seattle resident told police that someone stole a white 1991 Honda Accord that was parked in the Walgreen’s parking lot in the 2700 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The car was borrowed from a Bremerton man who is currently out of the country. The Seattle man left the vehicle in the lot at about 9 a.m. May 11 while he was working nearby. When he returned to the lot at 7 p.m., the car was missing.

Someone stole a red 1986 Toyota MR2 coupe between 3 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. from the Walgreen’s lot May 6, 7707 S.E. 27th St. The vehicle’s owner, a Bellevue resident left the car parked in the lot while working and returned to find the vehicle gone. The car had been locked.

An 81-year-old Sammamish man told police May 10 that someone stole his gold 1997 Cadillac Deville from, possibly, the North Mercer Way Park and Ride lot. The elderly man left his car in a lot along Interstate 90 on April 13, while he rode the bus to the Veteran’s Hospital. When he returned, he was unable to locate the vehicle, which he told police he was pretty sure he had parked there. Police personnel searched park and ride lots along I-90, but were unable to find the missing car.

Counterfeit bill

Someone paid for a purchase with a counterfeit $50 bill on May 2, a coffee shop employee told police May 6. The suspect, a white male, was not a regular customer at the business in the 3000 block of 78th Avenue S.E., and told the employee he was from out of town. Bank of America later confirmed that the bill was a counterfeit.

Plants attacked

Three girls about 13 to 15 years old were discovered at 7 p.m. May 10 pulling up plants at a residence in the 5700 block of West Mercer Way. The resident and her adult son confronted the girls as they were pulling up plants and dumping them in a large pile near the driveway. One of the teens told the resident they were making perfume, when asked why they were destroying the plants. The girls took off and ran east toward S.E. 59th Street and 84th Avenue S.E. when the resident told them she was going to call the police. Police searched the neighborhood but were unable to locate the youths.

Thefts

Someone stole three rifles, two shotguns and a pellet gun, from a storage room at a condominium complex in the 2900 block of 81st Place S.E. The owner of the guns had been out of town for the winter with his wife and returned May 6 to find a note from the complex manager informing him of the break-in. Police retrieved several items of clothing that didn’t belong to the victim in the storage room but had been left behind during the break-in. One of the items contained a grocery store receipt in the pocket, which included the purchaser’s name, Safeway Club Card information and debit card information.

Someone broke into the change compartment of a soft drink vending machine at the Globe Building, 9725 S.E. 36th St., and stole coins and the coin acceptor mechanism, which allows coins to be sorted in the machine. The theft occurred sometime between April 27 and May 9, the vending machine owner, a Federal Way man, told police May 10.

On Feb. 6, someone took $2,250 in cash and traveller’s checks from a petty cash box at an electrical manufacturing company in the 7500 block of S.E. 24th Street, a sales associate told police May 10. American Express, which issued the traveller’s checks, told the sales associate that the checks had all been cashed at one location, but wasn’t yet able to disclose the location.

A 16-year-old Mercer Island High School student told police May 10 that someone stole a mini iPod from her backpack at the school, 9100 S.E. 42nd St., sometime between 9:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. May 6. The device was valued at $400.

An employee at Mercer Island Care Center reported May 9 that his Game Boy was stolen from a nurse’s station at the facility, in the 7400 block of S.E. 24th Street, between 11 p.m. and midnight April 29. The device was valued at $220.

About $6,185 worth of tools were stolen during the night of May 5 from a construction site in the 4400 block of Forest Avenue, a Shoreline resident reported May 6. Stolen included various hammers, saws, drills and a $3,500 Leitz survey tool.

Theft from vehicles

During the night of May 9, someone broke into a 2003 Dodge Dakota truck parked at a residence in the 2800 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. Stolen was about $340 worth of electronics, including a white I-pod with a pink case and an I-pod charger, as well as $100 cash taken from inside the glove compartment. There was no damage to the vehicle.

A Sammamish woman told Island police May 9 that someone stole the license plates from her vehicle while it was parked in the 9300 block of S.E. 36th Street between April 29 and May 2. The stolen plates were replaced with another set of license plates that police discovered had been reported stolen in Seattle. The plates and fingerprints were entered into police evidence.

Police foot chase

A 31-year-old Newcastle man was arrested May 9 after he took off on foot while being questioned by police in the 7800 block of S.E. 27th Street. An officer on seatbelt emphasis patrol spotted the suspect at about 4:30 p.m. driving a gray 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer sport utility vehicle eastbound on S.E. 27th Street. The suspect was not wearing a seatbelt. When the SUV pulled into the Washington Mutual Bank parking lot, the officer approached the suspect and told him to get back in his vehicle. The suspect argued and refused before taking off on foot. The officer began a pursuit and called for backup. A second officer caught the suspect and handcuffed him. A search of the suspect’s vehicle resulted in the discovery of a small amount, less than 40 grams, of marijuana. The suspect was transported and booked into the Renton jail on suspicion of obstructing a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, failure to wear a seatbelt and driving with an expired license.

Found bicycle

A bicycle left parked for at least three days at the Mercer Island Library, 4400 S.E. 88th Ave., was turned over May 11 to the police found property department.
