Summer housekeeping at Mercer Island schools

While expansion of the band room at Mercer Island High School is still in the design phase, smaller projects at the district’s buildings are underway.

While expansion of the band room at Mercer Island High School is still in the design phase, smaller projects at the district’s buildings are underway.

At the high school, maintenance staff are resurfacing the running track, which will close the stadium from July 11 through Aug. 15, if there are no weather delays. Football is scheduled to start Aug. 17.

Tony Kuhn, maintenance and operations manager for the district, said the track is a new running surface made of rubber, which will compliment the new field turf that was put in two years ago.

Kuhn said his department is re-striping the middle school running track in the fall, repairing the roof at the under-cover play area at West Mercer Elementary School, re-striping the parking lots at all schools, re-striping the play areas at all three elementary schools, reconfiguring space at MIHS to expand the training room, and restoring the field at Island Park with help from the city.
