Track and field sends 14 athletes to districts

The Mercer Island team will send 14 athletes to the Sea-King district meet following a fifth-place finish for the boys and a sixth-place finish for the girls.

“Our team did really well,” said Mercer Island coach Lezley Smith. “They gave it their all in every event and that is all we can ask for.”

Islander senior Bryce Borer will compete at the district meet in the 110 hurdles, pole vault and the 1,600-meter with teammates Matt Stahl, Quinn Chasan and Aaron Azose.

Borer’s best finish came in the pole vault, placing third with a height of 12 feet.

Tyler Benster will compete at districts in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter as he finished in third place in each event.

Islander Alex Myerson took third place in the discus with a distance of 143 feet, 11 inches, while Trevor Powell qualified for districts by placing in the top five in the javelin.

Ethan Spiro qualified for districts with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 42 feet. Islander Jordan Turner also placed high enough to continue on in the triple jump.

Mercer Island senior Phillip Seda will compete at districts in the 110 hurdles, Chasan qualified in the 800-meter and Evan Dawson in the 100-meter.

Distance was the name of the game for the girls as Hailey Piper finished third at KingCo in the 1,600-meter with a time of 5:17.34.

Islanders Phoebe Merritt (800-meter) and Marielle Goyette (3,200-meter) will also compete at the Sea-King District meet being held today and Friday at the South West Complex in West Seattle.
