‘Willy Wonka Jr.’ is a sweet success / Review

Special to the Reporter

West Mercer Elementary School’s fourth- and fifth-grade students wowed audiences on Jan. 16-17 with their production of “Willy Wonka Jr.,” a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved story, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Directed by David Baxter and Clara Kurtenbach, the two-night event featured energetic performances, colorful costumes and a vibrant set, capturing the essence of Dahl’s whimsical world.

The students, some with previous stage experience and others new to theater, embraced their roles with enthusiasm. Whether it was the mysterious and exciting Wonka (played by Pacific Vannatter) or the tech-obsessed and energetic Mike Teavee (played by Jameson Silvers), each actor brought their character to life in a unique and memorable way.

The costumes were vibrant and imaginative, with Willy Wonka’s signature top hat, the Oompa Loompas’ quirky outfits, and the over-the-top personalities of the golden ticket winners taking center stage. The set, designed to resemble a candy-filled wonderland, featured larger-than-life props that helped transport the audience into the magical world of Willy Wonka.

The two performances were sold out and led to a standing-room-only crowd of enthusiastic family members, friends and community members, all of whom were treated to a heartwarming and entertaining evening.

The show’s success was a testament to the talent of West Mercer’s young performers and the guidance of their directors, Baxter and Kurtenbach, who helped bring the sweet story to life for all to enjoy.
