August 11, 1921 – May 31, 2023
Catherine L. (Kit) Eppel of Mercer Island, Washington passed peacefully in her sleep on May 31, 2023, at the age of 101. A lover of nature and animals, Kit spent most of her life on Mercer Island, WA, in her tiny home which she purchased in 1954 and refurbished with a large deck, beautiful windows looking into her wooded yard, and lots of art. She celebrated her 100th birthday in her home – a joyous occasion! Shortly thereafter she moved into an adult family home in Bellevue where she received compassionate care.
Kit was born on August 11, 1921, in St. Paul, MN, the seventh and youngest child of Leo Jacob Eppel and Lucretia Agnes Austin. The family lived in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN during her early years, later moving to Delano, MN, where they owned a restaurant. Kit graduated from St. Margaret’s Academy in 1940. After visiting her Aunt Hattie, who had moved to Seattle, she fell in love with the PNW and moved here in 1948.
Her first job in Seattle was working in the millinery department of the Bon Marche. She then enjoyed many years in advertising at the Seattle Times and the Bellevue American. Kit traveled to many countries around the world, collecting mementos, stories and art. She chose to be a single and boldly independent woman, enjoying lifelong friendships, her beloved cat and dog companions and a general zest for life. She also volunteered with Friends of the Needy through St. Monica’s Church on Mercer Island.
Kit had a deep curiosity about people and the world around her, adjusting well to life’s changes, all reasons she gave for her longevity. She is survived by many great nieces and nephews and friends who feel like family, whose lives are better for having known her.
A mass will be held for Kit on August 11, at 11 am at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, followed by a reception. Internment of her ashes will follow at the Sacred Heart Columbarium in Calvary Cemetery.
