The legacy and future – 50 years of MIPA’s Circus (previously McGurkus) Event | Island Forum

As we embark upon the final stages of planning for the 50th anniversary of MIPA's Circus, we are reminded of the most important aspect of this cherished event: it brings the families of Mercer Island together as a community.

As we embark upon the final stages of planning for the 50th anniversary of MIPA’s Circus, we are reminded of the most important aspect of this cherished event: it brings the families of Mercer Island together as a community.

All generations can participate in Circus. Younger kids enjoy the fun circus activities, older kids serve as key volunteers, grandparents bring their grandchildren, the MI police and Fire present safety awareness, and Island businesses donate items and entertainment. The school bus drivers are also there and play a key role by not only giving school bus tours, but also help entertain the crowd with their very own band — The Bus Boys!

Pam Hinnen and Julie Keefe are relative newcomers to the Mercer Island community and are honored to serve as co-chairs for this year’s milestone event. We joined MIPA for our kids and to get to know other families on the Island — volunteering for Circus has been a fun way to give back to the community we’ve come to love.

The history surrounding Circus are a beloved legacy for Mercer Island residents and we’re thrilled to help while keeping the experience true to its grassroots origins. We have many new volunteers with new ideas helping this year and we encourage everyone to celebrate the 50th annual event. It’s a few hours on a Spring Saturday of smiles and the chance to play with your community and neighbors.

Last but not least, Circus is not just for residents of Mercer Island, it’s for everyone, so please invite your friends in the Greater Seattle area! MIPA has been bringing families of young kids together for more than 70 years and along the way has raised money to support important Mercer Island programs. Circus is the largest fundraiser on MIPA’s calendar and all proceeds of the event go back to support our community. We hope you’ll join us at Circus on April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mercer Island High School.
