Why you should get behind I-732 | Letter

I loved Bill Severson's letter of June 15 urging us to support Initiative 732 to fight climate change and save the planet for our children and grandchildren. And kudos to state Sen. Steve Litzow for endorsing I-732. But I want to tell Mercer Islanders more about why folks across the political spectrum can get behind I-732:

I loved Bill Severson’s letter of June 15 urging us to support Initiative 732 to fight climate change and save the planet for our children and grandchildren. And kudos to state Sen. Steve Litzow for endorsing I-732. But I want to tell Mercer Islanders more about why folks across the political spectrum can get behind I-732:

• It’s revenue-neutral. I-732 balances a 1 percent decrease in the state sales tax and a decrease in the business and occupation tax on manufacturers with taxes on carbon pollution.

• No regulatory bureaucracy is created. It uses the power of the marketplace to give us all incentives to conserve and innovate.

• I-732 is based on a proven plan. It’s modeled on a 2008 law in British Columbia that is working well there.
