Why Mercer Island homes hold their value: It’s more than just real estate
Published 6:00 am Monday, September 22, 2025
I grew up on Mercer Island, raised my kids here, and for more than three decades I’ve sold real estate here. I always tell people: if I wasn’t at your house for a party in high school, I’ve probably been there at some point in my career, either showing it or selling it.
Mercer Island has changed over the years, yet in many ways it hasn’t. Driving down Island Crest Way or standing under the Friday night lights at a football game, I’m instantly transported back to my junior year. The faces and storefronts may evolve, but the heartbeat of the Island remains the same.
As a broker, I know we sell much more than houses…we sell this incredible community. Our location couldn’t be more central: we are the bullseye of the Seattle area, positioned perfectly between Bellevue and Seattle.
Yet despite that convenience, Mercer Island has managed to keep its “Mayberry” feel. Because we are literally an island, our borders are distinct – you don’t “kind of live” on Mercer Island. You either do, or you don’t.

What makes Mercer Island so special is the countless ways to connect and belong. Families can find their place at the Mercerwood Shore Club, Beach Club or the Country Club, enjoying lake access, tennis, pickleball, swim teams, or summer barbecues by the water.
The JCC, Parks and Rec, Boys & Girls Club, and PEAK ensure kids stay active, connected and engaged. Our Preschool Association and Senior Center provide support across generations, while Mercer Island Youth and Family Services is always there as a safety net.
Clubs, arts and culture thrive here too, from the Women’s Club and Crafts Guild to the Children’s Choir and Youth Theatre. Our places of worship are engaged and inclusive. And let’s not forget our vibrant “Town Center,” which has blossomed into a hub of dining and shopping: a wine bar, cocktail lounge, restaurants, French pastry shop, gourmet coffee, florist, gift shop, and of course, beloved Island Books.
Yes, real estate is about finding a home, but here it’s also about finding a true community. That’s why Mercer Island homes hold their value – not just because of the bricks and mortar, but because of the life that surrounds them.
