The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team continues to prove why they are the best team in Washington state, and maybe the Northwest.

The Islanders destroyed Seattle Prep 19-1 April 5 to push their record to 8-0 in Northwest play.

Mercer Island was led by Kevin Mahoney’s six goals and a balanced offensive attack. Four players scored in multiple goals including Chris Taylor with four, Greg Mahoney with four and Jacob Sonkin with two. Three other players, Jeff Christenson, David Sandman and Steven Frankel aslo scored for the Islanders during the game.

The Mercer Island defense continues to dismantle opposing offensive attacks. Noah Symington had four goal saves as just five shots-on-goal were taken during the game.

But the team’s success in games played against Washignton state teams is just a tune up for their games this week in New York state.

The 12 day trip east looms bigger on the players’ minds than the state title. Head coach Ian O’Hearn has his eyes set on a top ten ranking in the nation for his squad and a good trip could make that idea a reality.

The team played Saturday at Orchard Park, New York and was defeated 13-4. The Islander offense was led by Hank Bennett and Kevin Mahoney, who had two goals each. Symington finished with 17 saves during the game.

The Islanders played Monday at Skaneatles, New York and Tuesday at Corning East, New York (results of all three games were not known at press time). Mercer Island continues on with their journey playing at Shaker, New York on Thursday and at Guiderland, New York on Saturday.
