The Mercer Island football team recently had its awards banquet and the following awards were presented to the team members.

All KingCo 3A First team: Jon Deese, Center; Greg Mahony, Cornerback.

All KingCo 3A Second team: Greg Mahony, Running back; Jack Gala, Offensive tackle; Leroy Lutu, Safety.

All KingCo 3A Honorable Mention: Alex Holland, Running back; Tim Wettack, Outside Linebacker; Graham Maxwell, Inside Linebacker.

Note: Coach Dick Nicholl presented a special plaque to Coach Mike Linker for his 19 years of dedication to Islander Football.

MIHS wrestlers compete in Larry Brown Invite

The Mercer Island High School wrestlers competed in the Larry Brown Invitational at Fife High School Saturday and three wrestlers placed.

Alex Faith won the 119-pound weight division, while Davin Kunovsky (135) and Chris Pothoven (215) both finished third overall.

Benster races in 4K

Lindsay Benster, a seventh grader at Island Middle School, raced to a fourth place finish in the 13-14 girls 4K at the 2006 USA Cross-Country Junior Olympics in Spokane, Wash. on Dec. 9. In her first appearance at the national event Benster earned All-American designation and helped her Issaquah Gliders teammates to a fifth-place finish. Two thousand runners in five age divisions participated in the national event.

IMS wrestlers beat Maywood

The Islander Middle School wrestlers defeated Maywood Middle School 56-42. Results of individual matches were: Kyle Shanafelt, 78 pounds, first-round pin; Scott Mills, 85 pounds, first-round pin; Eric Hermanns, 90 pounds, second-round pin; Jasper Campbell, 95 pounds, lost via first-round pin; Blake Johnson, 100 pounds, lost via third-round pin; Tucker Vassau, 105 pounds, lost via second-round pin; Max Goetschel, 110 pounds, lost via second-round pin; Miles Brooks, lost via first-round pin; Joe Graham, 120 pounds, lost via first-round pin; Peter Lee, 125 pounds, win 15-4; Phillip Frazier, 130 pounds, second-round pin; Elliott Wittenberg, 137 pounds, win 8-0; Colton Knebel, 145 pounds, first-round pin; T.J. Blackburn, 154 pounds, first-round pin; Kyle Moline, 164 pounds, first-round pin; Evan Moline, heavy weight, first-round pin.

MIBGC baseball and softball registration

Registration is now open for the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club Little League baseball and softball, Islander Travel Teams and our winter Player Development Program (PDP).
