Mercer Island opened its varsity football season with a 16-3 victory on the road over Newport on March 12.
Mercer Island’s Jack Rowe scored on a 6-yard run, Samuel Gilchrist snagged an 11-yard scoring pass from Eli Fahey and Ryan Dallas had a safety. On the defensive end, Cole Drayton had two fumble recoveries and Truman Curry and Garrett Rogan had interceptions.
Next up, the locals will host Liberty at 7 p.m. on March 20.
