Safstrom and Kinsey will speak at Rotary meeting on March 23

Bill Safstrom and Shirley Kinsey will discuss the Nicholas Fund For Education and Educational Work in Guatemala at the Rotary Club of Mercer Island’s March 23 meeting.

Safstrom has a master of education degree in school administration from Seattle Pacific University and was a middle and high school teacher and principal for 45 years. He has been a member of the Nicolas Fund Board of Directors since 2011 and has made 12 trips to Guatemala in support of Mayan teachers and their students in the rural public elementary schools in the Ixil region.

Kinsey earned a master of education degree from the University of Washington, specializing in reading development. She was a reading specialist at Mill Creek Elementary School for four years before moving up to teach middle and high school English for 16 years in Mill Creek. In 2015, she traveled to Guatemala to train teachers with Nicolas Fund for Education, and upon retiring in 2018, she joined the education committee.
