After 80 minutes of competition, two five-minute golden-goal overtime periods and five rounds of penalty kicks, they got it.

The Islanders outlasted the Saints 5-4 in PKs to earn a 3-2 win and punch their ticket to the 3A state tournament.

Islander goalie Matt LeProwse recorded a save on Interlake’s fourth attempt, while senior Noah Talerman bounced in the winning goal off the crossbar on Mercer Island’s fifth and final attempt to secure the win.

The Saints (10-6-0) claimed an early 1-0 lead in the first half before Mercer Island (15-1-1) evened the score off a Hunter Bauman penalty kick, making it a 1-1 game at halftime.

Interlake took a 2-1 lead in the second half before David Braman tied the game with 18 minutes left in regulation. Though both teams had its opportunities, neither would score again until the PK shootout.

Mercer Island advances as the No. 2 seed out of district two. The 3A state tournament begins May 16-18.
