Both the Mercer Island boys and girls lacrosse teams will play during their respective state playoff semifinals, thanks to dominating victories last week.

The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team hammered Maple Valley 13-6 during the second round of state competition Saturday at Islander Stadium. The home team was led by Greg Mahony with five goals and Taylor Dawson with three.

The victory means Mercer Island will host Bellevue tonight for the right to face the winner between Bainbridge Island and Garfield during the state finals at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium located at the Seattle Center on Saturday. The Islander boys have won the last three state titles and head into the state semifinals ranked No. 2 in the state behind Bainbridge Island, the only team they have lost to this season.

Mercer Island finished the regular season with a victory over Skyline High School, 14-9, on May 8 at Islander Stadium. Greg Mahony and Matt Wright led the Islanders with four goals each.

Girls win East Division

The Mercer Island girls varsity lacrosse team won the East Division title and a bye during the first round of the state playoffs as they posted an 11-2-1 record this season.

The record is the third-best in the state behind Bainbridge Island and Lakeside, which both finished the regular season with records of 13-1. The Islanders finished the regular season schedule May 8 with an 18-3 thumping of Overlake on the North Field at Mercer Island High School.

The Islanders will play at 6 p.m. Thursday at Islander Stadium during the state semifinals. The winner of the game will advance to the state title game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
