Mercer Island baseball and boys soccer advance to state semifinals

Mercer Island High School’s baseball and boys soccer teams advanced to the 3A state semifinals with a handful of victories over the weekend.

The baseballers beat Bainbridge, 8-0, and Auburn, 6-1, on May 21 in the state tourney. They will next play top-ranked West Seattle at 7 p.m. on May 27 at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.

Against Bainbridge, MI hurler Austin Cupic got the win while pitching seven innings and striking out 12 with no walks, and the Islanders received two hits each from Chris Mock, Kaden Wu, Jack Varney and Halen Otte.

Pitcher Evan Otte notched the win against Auburn while fanning seven over six and one-third innings. From the plate, Wu and Marques Abulhosn had two hits each.

On the boys soccer front, the Islanders beat Stadium, 3-1, on May 20 and Lincoln (Seattle), 2-1, on May 21 in the state tourney. They will next play Monroe at 2 p.m. on May 27 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Against Stadium, Cooper Gersch scored two penalty kicks and Kaleb Rawson netted one goal. In the Lincoln game, Gersch and Brady Gilroy scored goals, and goalkeeper Jackson Barker saved a PK.
