Mercer Island boys soccer routs Liberty 6-1 | Prep notebook

The Mercer Island boys soccer team earned a solid win over Liberty on Tuesday evening at home. The Islanders downed the Patriots with a final score of 6-1. The team is currently 7-2-1 this season.

The game, which started slow for both teams, had it’s first goal in the fifth minute of the game when Danny Strome sent a soaring kick, after a pass from Matt Johnson over the top of Liberty goalie Nate Mak into the top right hand corner of the goal. It took Liberty another 30 minutes to connect things together, when Dean Byron sent a pass which rolled right through the Mercer Island defense and sneaked past goalie Nicolas Terentjev to give the Patriots their lone goal of the night.

The teams continued to battle back and forth, without much progress on the field, until late in the second half when the Islanders went on a scoring frenzy.

The combination of Alex Wood and Tyler Ybarra proved effective as the duo scored twice in four minutes. They first connected on a down field run in the 50th minute, but doing it again in the 54th minute to give the Islanders a 3-1 lead. Then at the 70 minute mark of the game Jene Wook-Shin put a pass from Matt Johnson into the back of the goal in what would be Johnson’s first of three assists in the night. Johnson found Kenny Nelson in the 72nd minute for a 5-1 lead before giving Wook-Shin another goal, the game’s final, in the 78 minute.

The Islanders are currently sitting in the top spot for the KingCo 3A boys conference.

The Mount Si boys team is in second place in the conference with a 7-1-3 record.
