Two Mercer Island Little League All-Star teams recently wrapped deep postseason runs in state tournament competition.
The Mercer Island 9-10 All-Stars advanced to the winner’s bracket final of their tournament, which took place July 16 through July 24 in Lynnwood. The 9-10 All-Stars won their first three tournament games by 10 runs each, beating teams from Walla Walla, Bothell and Bonney Lake-Sumner. Mercer Island lost to eventual state champion Greater Richland, falling 9-4 in extra innings. In the consolation bracket, the 9-10 All-Stars fell to Mill Creek 8-6.
Manager Mak Abulhosn said he was impressed with the level of confidence displayed by his players throughout the tournament.
“[They have an] ability to grasp technical things that I don’t think most 10-year-olds are able to,” Abulhosn said. “They have high expectations of themselves and do it in way that doesn’t put pressure on themselves.”
The 9-10 All-Star team members include Brandon Abulhosn, Neal Baron, Jack Buchan, Shane Deguchi, Tyler Gilroy, Carter Gribble, James Gumbs, Spencer Kornblum, Evan Otte, Julian Peters, Mason Szylko, Jayden Wang and Matt Williamson. The all-stars are led by Abulhosn and coaches Mike Gilroy and Les Baron.
The Mercer Island 10-11 All-Stars made their way to the championship game of their tournament, which took place July 23 through July 31 in Clarkston.
The 10-11 All-Stars won their first two games of the double-elimination tournament before falling to Walla Walla 15-1 in the semifinal round. Mercer Island defeated PacWest 13-2 in the consolation bracket for another shot at Walla Wall in the title game.
Mercer Island showed progress, but couldn’t overcome the tournament’s undefeated team in the final, with Walla Walla winning 11-3.
Manager Robin Fuchs said he was most impressed by the resiliency showed by his group of players that made its second-straight Little League state championship game.
“Hopefully they learned a lot through the six weeks we were at it,” Fuchs said. “Hopefully they developed into better baseball players and will want to come back next year, go at it again and see how far they can go.”
The 10-11 All-Star team members include Marques Abulhosn, Jack Beebe, Chaz Brotherton, Austin Cupic, Nicholas Fuchs, Lucas Fujii, Alex Henderson, Edgar Nakamura, Noah Perlman, Jakob Schulz, Spencer Smith, Dane Steiner and Ethan Yang. The team is managed by Fuchs and coached by Brad Brotherton and Steve Yang.
