Mercer Island sweeps Bellevue, locks up KingCo crown | Prep volleyball

The Mercer Island volleyball team locked up its fourth KingCo 2A/3A league title in five years, sweeping the rival Bellevue Wolverines 27-25, 25-19, 25-18 Monday night at Bellevue High School. The win was Mercer Island's 10th straight, as well as its eighth-consecutive victory coming in straight sets.

The win was Mercer Island’s 10th straight, as well as its eighth-consecutive victory coming in straight sets.

The last time the Islanders (13-1, 12-0 in KingCo) lost a set of volleyball was against the Wolverines (11-3, 9-3) in a 3-1 Mercer Island victory on Sept. 21.

Mercer Island’s outside hitters led the attack Monday night, with Kelly Behrbaum posting 11 kills and three aces, while Adara Hamilton recorded 10 kills. Middle blockers Tessa Fisk and Lindsey Lovsted each had eight kills, with Fisk adding five blocks and Lovsted tallying two. Setter Natalie Robinson registered 41 assists to go with six kills and four aces and libero Tess Hendelman posted 13 digs.

Mercer Island has two league contests remaining before postseason competition begins. The Islanders will take on Lake Washington (5-8, 5-7) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Washington High School before finishing conference play against Liberty (5-8, 5-7) at 7 p.m. Monday at Mercer Island High School.
