Island 10-year-old Gordon Gibson was runner-up in his youth sparring division at the USA Taekwondo National Championships, which took place July 4-10 in Richmond, Virginia.

Island 10-year-old Gordon Gibson was runner-up in his youth sparring division at the USA Taekwondo National Championships, which took place July 4-10 in Richmond, Virginia.

Gibson, who will begin fifth grade at Lakeridge Elementary this fall, competed in the 10-11 year old 30 kg (66 pounds) division at the red belt level.

He scored four wins leading up to the championship match, including rallying from a 5-1 point deficit in the quarterfinal to win in overtime.

In the final, Gibson fell to 11-year-old Donovan Eugenio of Federal Way.

Gibson competes with Seattle’s Yi Sport Taekwondo and has trained with coach Lionel Lee since he was 4 years old.
