Mercer Islanders win KingCo crown

The Mercer Island Islanders won the Class 3A KingCo boys tennis tournament on Oct. 11 at Mercer Island High School, compiling a total of 47 team points. The Islanders outscored second place Lake Washington by a staggering 22 team points.

The Islanders No. 1 doubles team of Christian Anderson/Chris Elliott captured first place in the KingCo doubles tournament. The Anderson/Elliott team had a perfect 4-0 record at the tourney. The Mercer Island doubles tandem consisting of Kevin Chen/Jonah Tang nabbed second place at the KingCo tournament. The Chen/Tang squads’ only defeat came against Anderson/Elliott in the finals.

The Mercer Island doubles team of Luke Boksem/Christoph Schmidt-Wardnecke collected a third place finish in the doubles tournament. Mercer Island singles star Zach Chew captured first place in the KingCo 3A singles tourney, compiling an overall record of 4-0. Chew defeated Bellevue’s Cameron Yang 2-0 (6-2, 6-1) in the championship match. All seven of these athletes will compete in the Class 3A boys state tennis tournament this spring at the Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick.
