MI-Bellevue ‘Thin Mints’ finish 4th in regional tournament

Gilroy had a 1-0 lead until the fifth when Mercer Island-Bellevue tied the game at 1-1. But the Northern California team scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Playing a consolation game against Southern California representative Burbank on Sunday, the Thin Mints again went down to defeat, 6-3, to end the tournament in fourth place. The team had previously beaten Burbank days earlier by a 6-4 scoreline.

Led by Islander coach Pat McCarthy, the Mercer Island-Bellevue Softball All-Stars were undefeated in the group phase.

Wins against Lewiston, Idaho, 4-3 in extra innings on Aug. 7, San Tan Little League of Mesa, Ariz., 1-0 on Aug. 6, Southern California representative Burbank (6-4), Aug. 4, and Montana representative Billings (12-5), on Aug. 2, helped them reach the semifinal game.

West Region winners Nunaka Valley Little League of Alaska advanced to the Little League Softball World Series after defeating Gilroy, 8-1. The competition will be held on Aug. 13-19 in Portland, Ore.
