MLB pitcher Matt Boyd visits retirees in hometown Mercer Island

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Boyd spoke at Covenant Shores on Oct. 30.

The Mercer Island native athlete talked about highlights in his young career. Last month he came to within one out of pitching a no-hitter against the White Sox.

In addition to sharing his faith journey with residents, Boyd demonstrated how he grips a baseball in his repertoire of pitches.

When asked who he was pulling for in the World Series, Boyd admitted to being on the fence. His dad is a lifelong Dodgers fan, but he’s a fan of his former teammate and pitching ace Justin Verlander (who now pitches for Houston).

At the conclusion of Boyd’s presentation, Pastor Bud Palmberg (who baptized him as a infant) prayed a blessing over his career and young family.
