Islander Steven Duchaine, a goalie for SnoKing Jr. Thunderbirds, had a 2-0 shutout in Spokane Thursday, Nov. 10. The team Squirt B2, comprised of 8, 9, and 10 year-olds, took third place in the tournament.

Within the last week I was sadly reminded how tenuous and fragile is the tether that holds us here on earth. Every death that occurs in the world of winter snow sports seems tragic, but when it happens to a friend of yours, it is even more so. Like so many others on Mercer Island, I was honored to call David Pettigrew my friend.

Islander Middle School student, seventh-grader Vanessa Gaffney placed first in the Washington State Gymnastics Meet Level 6 competition at Meydenbauer Center on Dec. 3-4. Vanessa competed in the 11-12 year old age group, receiving an all-around score of 36.00, the highest of any age group in the level 6 competition.

Mercer Island Mary Wayte Pool will hold extra public swims from Monday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Dec. 30. The 2-4 p.m. swim are $4.25 and the 5:30-7 p.m. swims are $3.25. The Public swims are designed for parents to practice or play with the children, or for kids to just come and play in the water. The pool will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Mary Wayte Pool is operated by Northwest Center, a non-profit organization.
