The Mercer Island Power baseball team rallied to win three of its five games to place third during the Maltby 9 -and-under Mustang Invitational Tournament held the weekend of July 1-3 in Maltby, Wash., despite an 11-8 loss to the host team, Maltby All-Stars, of the opening game.

After losing the first game, the MI Power bounced back with a five-inning no-hitter for a 12-0 victory over the Bellevue Blaze. Jacob Stenberg and Sam Peterson combined to throw the no-hitter. In order to secure a spot in the winner’s bracket, the MI Power put together another solid game on Saturday during a 9-2 win over the Eastlake Jettas.

On Sunday, the team played perhaps its best game of the season in a losing effort against the tournament favorite, the Bellevue Pony All-Stars. The MI Power jumped to an early 3-0 lead after three innings behind a strong defensive effort and the pitching of Christopher Lawler against a talented team of all-stars from its regular season league. The Bellevue All-Stars rallied to tie the game at 3-3 during the fourth inning, but the MI Power came back to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Bellevue All-Stars responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead that turned out to be the final score. After the tough loss, the MI Power bounced back with 14 hits in an impressive 9-3 victory over the Maltby All-Stars in the game to determine third place.

Leading hitters for the MI Power during the tournament were Lawler who batted .600 with six rbis and 11 stolen bases and Nate Schuler who batted .571. Stenberg recorded an on-base percentage of .563 and tied for the team lead with 11 stolen bases and six-runs scored.
