Former Mercer Island High School boys soccer standout Colin Rigby was selected during the second round of the United Soccer League Division I college draft by the Portland Timbers Jan. 24.

“I am definitely considering playing for them,” said Rigby. “But I am still in school and they haven’t made me an offer yet.”

Rigby completed four seasons with the Falcons in November and will earn a business degree this June.

“I really enjoyed playing there,” said Rigby. “It was a good team, good coaching and just a good experience.”

“I am really up in the air about moving to Portland, but I am considering it.”

Rigby, a forward, was the 17th pick overall in the draft for the league in which the Seattle Sounders play. Teammate Andy Willis was taken by the Sounders.

“I think the USL has a good grasp on Northwest players,” said Rigby. “I’ve always wanted to play professionally and this is a great opportunity for that.”

Rigby said that he ultimately would like to play in Europe. But the next step from the USL could be playing in the United States’ highest professional league, Major League Soccer.

“I would play in the MLS if given the chance,” said Rigby.

Rigby graduated from Mercer Island High School in 2003 and helped guide the boys soccer team to three consecutive trips to the state playoffs.
