Celtics take title

The Celtics won the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club fifth grade boys championship on March 17 against the Grizzlies 28-22.

The game started out as a defensive battle with Tommy Hassall and Harrison Clarke putting the clamps on the Grizzly attack. During the second quarter, the Celtics exploded for numerous big baskets by Peter Welch and Tate Crenshaw, blowing the game open to a 22-12 halftime lead.

With the advantage on the scoreboard going into the third quarter, the Celtics focused on defense with Ben Furukawa and Charlie West coming up with key defensive plays. Kevin Bernstein and Hassall had key driving layups and Marcus Wurster ripped down some tough rebounds during the stretch. Welch ended up with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Crenshaw had 6 points and Tommy Hassall had six steals and two blocked shots as the Celtics prevailed to take the trophy.

Crow takes eighth

Tonayo Crow from Mercer Island participated in the Blooms and Blossoms gymnastics meet held at Sammamish High School in Bellevue on March 11.

Tonayo placed eighth overall in Level 5, age 11 division, with an All-Around score of 35.775.

On her events, she placed fourth on vault with a score of 9.05, 10th on bars with a score of 9.025, third on beam with a score of 9.125, and 10th on floor with a score of 8.575.
