Two Islanders notch KingCo wrestling titles, team takes third

Mercer Island High School wrestlers Gordon Gibson (113 pounds) and Chase Warnick (145 pounds) each notched individual titles at the 3A KingCo sub-regional tournament on Feb. 4 at Juanita High School.

The Islanders — who qualified 13 wrestlers to regionals — finished third in the team standings.

Also qualifying for regionals are: 106, Leo Garry (second at KingCo) and Jordan Benitez (third); 126, Lincoln Woods (second) and Ethan Chang (sixth); 132, Maxwell Martin (third) and Creed Finifrock (fifth); 152, Clark Koopman (second) and Keaton Hey (sixth); 160, Scott Blasko (sixth); 170, Jack Levitt (fourth); and 182, Liam Watson (sixth).

Regionals will take place on Feb. 12 in Hermiston, Oregon. The Mat Classic XXXIII state tournament is set for Feb. 18-19 at the Tacoma Dome.

Tops with victories this season are Gibson with a 26-3 record, Woods at 21-2 and Warnick at 22-6.
