Off to the races | Mercer Island Half kicks off running season; raises money for cancer

About 3,500 people participated in the annual event, deemed a success despite police activity in the area in the early morning.

Roughly 3,500 runners and walkers turned out to race around Mercer Island for the 44th annual Rotary Half Marathon Sunday, beginning at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

The Mercer Island Half is one of the Island’s largest events of the year. Race director Gary Redman estimated over 4,000 registered for Sunday’s run, and despite some early-morning police activity, he said everything came out “absolutely perfectly.”

Shortly before race time, police were working to apprehend a stolen vehicle from Renton on the westbound I-90 off-ramp at Island Crest Way.

“I talked with state patrol and told them, ‘No problem, but you got 2,200 runners coming by here,’” Redman said. “With the help of Ed Holmes of the Mercer Island Police Department, they got the vehicle towed out of there like it never happened. Needless to say, I breathed a big sigh of relief.”

Seattle’s Uli Steidl won the half marathon with a time of 1:11.22. Islander Jennifer Enge was the top female finisher at 1:24.46.

Kevin Hansen of Lake Forest Park won the 10K run (34:41), while Seattle’s Amanda Kennedy was the top female finisher (41:36).

Seattle’s Samuel Bradley-Kelly won the 5K run (18:03), and Seattle’s Somer Kreisman was the top female finisher with a time of 20 minutes.

The race is a fundraiser for colon cancer prevention and Rotary charities. Donations were still being counted as of Monday morning. Redman estimated money raised this year was on par with that of last year, which came out to over $22,000.

“Thank you to all participants and donors for their cooperation and generosity, we appreciate the community’s support,” Redman said. “This is the 44th year, and each year it seems to go along pretty well. The Parks and Recreation department does a phenomenal job helping with the set up. The community is a big part in making it happen, so a big thank you to them.”
