Senior Foundation awards announced

The Senior Foundation of Mercer Island, a non-profit corporation that raises funds to support non-profit programs that help Mercer Island seniors, awarded grants to four organizations:
? $5,000 to Club 24 for respite care to families living on Mercer Island who are caring full time for a senior family member. Respite care refers to short term, temporary care to seniors in order for their families to take a break from the daily routine.
? $2,000 to Mercer Island Parks and Recreation for eight headsets in the new Community Center to assist those who are hard of hearing.
? $1,420 to Northwest Pool Center for twenty sets of water aerobics equipment at the Mary Wayte Pool to expand the senior water aerobics program.
? $ 480 to Mercer Island Parks and Recreation for the salary of the low vision support group facilitator.
The foundation hosts a variety of events to raise money to fund the grants. The remaining events for this year include an Island Senior Resource Fair at the LDS Church Sept. 17; Oct. 1: a TLC (Tender Loving Community) Tea at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, a multigenerational event, honoring 90-year-olds Oct. 1; and a book sale at Island Books Nov. 18.
