Mercer Island grad selected in Major League Lacrosse draft

Mercer Island High School graduate Greg Mahony became one of the first players from Washington to be drafted by a professional  lacrosse team. Mahony was chosen 56th overall by the 2011 MLL champion’s Boston Cannons.

Mahony, who played lacrosse for Mercer Island before playing for Yale University. During his time with Yale he was a two-time All-Ivy and All-New England honoree. In 2011 the midfielder was third in scoring, earning 16 goals and eight assists in 14 games. That season the Bulldogs advanced to the semifinal round of the Ivy League men’s lacrosse tournament.

During his time with the Islanders, Mahony played football, swam and was a two-time first team All-State selection in lacrosse.

Mahony and O’Dea grad Drew Snider became the second and third players from Washington to play professional lacrosse.  Chris Taylor, another graduate of Mercer Island High School, played for the Chesapeake Bayhawks.

Major League Lacrosse is a North American professioanl, outdoor field lacrosse league with teams in Boston, Charlotte, N.C., Baltimore, Denver, Co., Long Island, N.Y., Columbus, Ohio and Hailton, Ontario.
