Cadette Girl Scout Troop 44297 of Mercer Island went to Pioneer Square in Seattle on Christmas morning, for their second annual “Morning of Giving.”

They served coffee, clementines, water and homemade Christmas cookies they had made with their families to homeless people, and donated care packages.

The girls have been working on this project during troop meetings and days off from school for the past three months, said troop leader Terese Broccoli.

The troop set a goal to make 100 “bags of care,” which were filled with socks, breakfast bars, tissues, mylar blankets, wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, cup of noodles, candies and a hat or gloves.

They made flyers and donation boxes, and asked Mercer Island businesses and their patrons to donate items.

Some of the top contributers were MI Athletic Club, Studio Ectypos Architecture, 5 Elements Pilates, 77 Central, Mercer Island Dentistry, KZ Dentistry, The Bees Knees of Bellevue, Your Ideal Self and Trader Joe’s of Bellevue. In addition, the Starbucks on Southeast 68th Street donated coffee, QFC donated gift cards and Mud Bay donated dog food for some of the homeless pets.
