No. 1-seeded Mercer Island High School (MIHS) defeated Shorewood, 1-0, to notch the 3A state boys soccer championship on May 30 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Sophomore Dylan Jones scored the game-winner for the Islanders, who repeated as state champs and finished the season with a 16-2-1 overall record. They won 15 consecutive matches to close out their spring campaign and conceded only one goal at state.

During its state run, MIHS beat Gig Harbor, 3-0, in the semifinals; Kennewick, 4-1, in the second round; and Lakeside, 4-0, in the quarterfinals.

Senior Kyle Cupic said that, “confidence and our trust in one another led us to victory.”

Head coach Meelod Shaterian added that the keys to the Islanders’ success was, “The bond the boys have with each other, and how hard they are willing to work for each other. They all grew up together, so many of their parents showed me pictures of them playing soccer together when they are 4 or 5 years old, to now winning state championships together. The love they have for each other is deep.”
