The Mercer Island baseball team wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday with a 9-6 loss to Sammamish.

The Islanders are likely to finish sixth in the KingCo standings, depending on the final games for other teams in the league, and will move into the KingCo tournament, which begins next week. If the Islanders do finished in fifth place, the team will play No. 4, Liberty, on Tuesday, May 8 at 4 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. The Islanders would have to win their first KingCo game to advance in the tournament.

Against Sammamish on Wednesday, the Totems were up 3-0 at the end of the first inning. The Islanders didn’t score until the top of the third inning, when they added five runs to the scoreboard. But Sammamish answered quickly, holding Mercer Island from scoring in the top of the fourth, while adding four runs. The team would add two more in the bottom of the fifth, holding the Islanders to one in the last four innings.

Sammamish pitcher Ryan Hashimoto was credited with the win, pitching for almost four full innings, allowing five hits and one run. Mercer Island’s Alex HImstead took the mound for three and 1/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and seven runs.

At bat, scoring for the Islanders were Chris Lawler, Brandon Lawler, Matt Orehek, Philip Pugel, Steven Petrie and Isak Morris.

The team had six runs off 11 hits.
