Sept. 17-23 is Constitution Week. Mercer Island members of the local chapter of the National Society Daughters of the Revolutionary War are doing it up proud.

The members of the Cascade Chapter of the group will decorate the Mercer Island Library Sept. 1 in honor of the document. “It’s important to celebrate it and recognize it as our means of freedom,” said Mary H. Kent, a Bellevue resident who is a member of the Cascade Chapter. “It’s what separates us from other non-free (countries).” The display will include a replica of the Constitution and educational materials, including book and movie recommendations to help people understand the importance of the document. It will be in the library for a month.

Boomers do retirement Also at the library this month will be free previews of the Public Broadcasting Service special “The Open Road: America Looks At Aging.” It examines the impending retirement of 77 million baby boomers — “the most active, educated and vital demographic group of retirees the country has ever seen.” The previews — on Aug. 30 at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. — are being presented by Senior Adult Services of Youth & Family Services, the Chamber of Commerce and Covenant Shores Retirement Community. The one-hour film “explores the lives and work of dynamic and thoughtful individuals whose choices in life reveal the obstacles and opportunities all boomers will confront as they enter life’s third stage. The program contains stories of people from all walks of life who have shaped and continue to shape their golden years,” according to promotional materials. The film profiles retirees who found themselves unprepared for the financial hardships and are forced to return to work, as well as those who choose to volunteer.

Islander to head local Susan G. Komen affiliate Lynn D. Hagerman was named executive director of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Puget Sound Affiliate, effective July 1. The foundation is a national organization fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.

Hagerman previously was the principal of her own Seattle firm providing planning and project management services to regional health care and non-profit organizations.

She also has served as vice president of planning and business development at Evergreen Healthcare with responsibility for new program development, strategic planning and overall growth strategy. Hagerman has held positions at Valley Medical Center and Pacific Medical Center & Clinics in strategic planning and new services development. Hagerman takes over from founder and former Executive Director CJ Taylor, who retired in December 2004.
