Island ‘Destination ImagiNation’ teams get ready to compete | School briefs

The 2014 Destination ImagiNation (DI) Regional Tournament will be held at Mercer Island High School this year on Mar. 1.  There are two high school teams, five middle school teams and five elementary teams.  Regional winners will compete at the State DI competition in Wenatchee on Mar. 29.

The  program is open to all Mercer Island students. It is an international program dedicated to inspiring and equipping students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.  Teams learn 21st century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship and courage. The teams solve various challenges in categories including technical, scientific, structural, fine arts, improvisational and service.

The extracurricular program is coached by Mark Headlee, a 5th grade teacher at West Mercer Elementary school.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. and finishes at 4 p.m. with the awards ceremony scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
