Special to the Reporter

Founded in 1966, the Mercer Island Preschool Association (MIPA) Circus is one of Mercer Island’s longest-running traditions — and the island’s oldest children’s festival. Now marking its 60th year, the beloved event continues as a uniquely homegrown celebration, built by volunteers, centered on children and sustained by generations of shared memories and community pride.

In recognition of this milestone, the city of Mercer Island has officially proclaimed April 25, 2026, as Mercer Island Preschool Association Circus Day.

Today, the MIPA Circus features hands-on games, live entertainment, inflatables, animals and performances designed for children ages 0–11. The 60th MIPA Circus will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 25 at Islander Middle School.

The proclamation describes the MIPA Circus as “a treasured Island tradition that brings the community together,” noting its beginnings as a Dr. Seuss–inspired carnival called Circus McGurkus for local children. Over six decades, it has grown into a beloved festival attracting hundreds of families from across the region. It emphasizes that the Circus is not a spectator event, but a hands-on experience where children can move, play and create lasting memories — while engaging the entire community, from student volunteers to local clubs and businesses.

The Circus began as a small preschool fundraiser inspired by “If I Ran the Circus” by Dr. Seuss. Created to celebrate childhood imagination and bring families together, the original event raised just $200. It was launched by Ann Ekbald, Mari Nelson, Jackie Davison and Rochelle Casserd. Nelson famously wrote to Dr. Seuss requesting permission to use the theme and received a personal reply granting his blessing — beginning a correspondence he continued until 1991.

The event remains deeply rooted in volunteerism, with MIPA families, alumni, students and community partners contributing each year. Their shared commitment has helped make the Circus a cornerstone of Mercer Island life.

Mayor Dave Rosenbaum’s proclamation encourages the community to celebrate this 60-year milestone, attend the festivities and honor the volunteers and families whose dedication to joy, connection and childhood wonder has sustained the tradition.
