While finalizing a pair of major projects in the wastewater system realm, the city of Mercer Island is enhancing reliability and environmental safety for the community.

The projects — which will modernize the city’s wastewater system — consist of fully overhauling Sewer Pump Station 11 with larger pumps and advanced controls to support a new Interstate-90 trail pipeline alignment, and replacing aging backup generators at pump stations 23 and 25.

The city has partnered with King County on the regional Sewer Pump Station 11 project, which is funded by King County rate payers. The project is 99% complete, with the Fruitland Landing street end reopening soon, the city said.

The second project is funded by Island rate payers, and the upgrades ensure continuous operation during power outages.

“The city thanks the Mercerwood Shore Club and nearby residents for their patience during these complex installations,” the city said.

RESTORATION EVENT

As one of the city’s nine restoration events in May, its Natural Resources team will host an event from 10 a.m. to noon on May 23 at Engstrom Open Space next to Pioneer Park.

The Forest Steward-led work party will feature volunteers removing ivy that is blanketing the forest floor.

“Removing ivy helps to increase the biodiversity of the park by making room for native plants to sprout up. If left unchecked, ivy will grow over our native plants and eventually pull them to the ground. Your help in removing ivy will play a pivotal role in creating a healthier future for the park,” the city said.
