Islanders junior earns a coveted honor.

The Mercer Island Islanders boys tennis team compiled 25 team points, earning the Class 3A state championship on May 26. Lakeside finished in second place with 17 team points. In the Class 3A singles tournament, Islanders player Christian Anderson captured third place and teammate Chris Elliot finished in fourth place. Mercer Island boys tennis team wins Class 3A state championship

Islanders earn a state title.

The Mercer Island Islanders girls 800 relay and 1600 relay teams captured first place at the Class 3A state track and field meet on May 26 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.                                The 800 relay team consisting of Maya Virdell, Maggie Baker, Gretchen Blohm and Kayla Lee earned first place with a time of 1:42.86. The 1600 relay team of Virdell, Baker, Blohm and Lee cruised to a first place finish with a time 3:51.56. Shorecrest finished in a distant second place with a time of 3:57.80. Bellevue finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 17-2. The Islanders finished with an overall record of 16-7. The Islanders, who finished with a total of 70.5 team points, finished 21 points behind first place Bellevue. Mercer Island golfer Gihoe Seo captured third place individually with a total of 151 strokes at the two-day tournament.

Lee (pictured), who ran the fourth and final leg of the relay, was well in front of all other competitors down the stretch. Holy Names finished in a distant second place with a time of 4:00.44.

Ballard finished in second place with a time of 1:44.20.
