Islander soccer squad is peaking at the right time

Mercer Island boys soccer team has won eight of its past nine games.

The Islanders, who compiled 355 total points (low score wins in golf) edged out second place Sammamish by 28 strokes. Mercer Island golfers Ella Warburg and Gihoe Seo tied for second place individually, with each golfer shooting a 79 on the 18-hole course. The Islanders have won all four golf tournaments they’ve competed in during the 2018 season thus far.

The Islanders improved their overall record to 5-0 with the victory. Islanders athletes earning first place in their respective events consisted of Gretchen Blohm (200, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay), Margaret Baker (400, 800 relay, 1600 relay), Chloe Michaels (1600, 3200), Maya Virdell (300 hurdles, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay), Eliza Crenshaw (400 relay, 800 relay), Katie McCormick (400 relay, high jump), Ella Hensey (1600 relay, long jump), Faith Osei-Tutu (shot-put) and Aleksandra Kogalovski (pole vault). Crenshaw (pictured) competes in the 800-meter relay against Liberty.

The Mercer Island boys squad lost to Interlake 76-69 and were defeated by Redmond 98-57. Islanders’ girls athletes capturing first place in their respective events consisted of Maya Virdell (100 meters, 1600 meter-relay), Gretchen Blohm (200 meters, 800 meter-relay), Kayla Lee (400 meters, 800 meter-relay, 1600 meter-relay), Katie McCormick (100 meter hurdles), Ella Hensey (800 meter-relay, 1600 meter-relay), Eliza Crenshaw (800 meter-relay), Margaret Baker (1600 meter-relay), Faith Osei-Tutu (shot-put, javelin) and Susanna Lepow (pole vault). Islanders’ boys athletes earning first place in their events were Colin Farrell (100 meters, 200 meters), Jack Clayville (110 hurdles), Mitchell Kirby (300 hurdles), Eli Yen (discus) and Jeffery Tian (pole vault). Yian (pictured) competes in the 110 hurdles in a double dual against the Interlake Saints and Redmond Mustangs on March 29.

The tournament, which featured 100 golfers from 15 different high school programs, was dominated by the Islanders. Mercer Island won the tournament, compiling a score of 330 strokes. Bellingham finished in second place with a distant 384 strokes. The Islanders broke the tournament record by nine strokes (Islanders set the previous record in 2017 with 339 strokes). Freshman Gihoe Seo captured first place at the tournament with a score of a 77. Ella Warburg earned second place with a score of 79 strokes. Lily Pruchno nabbed fifth place, Estey Chen registered a seventh-place finish and Katelyn Davis tallied a 10th-place finish.

The Islanders girls track squad earned a 98-86 win against Lake Washington and a 134-45 triumph against Sammamish.                                The Mercer Island Islanders boys track team defeated Sammamish 126-47 but lost to Lake Washington 139-34. Ashley Rudd, Maya Virdell, Kayla Lee and Maggie Baker were members of the winning girls 800-meter relay squad with a time of 1:48.34. Virdell, Lee and Baker are pictured in the above photo.
