$8,000 worth of items were stolen from a residence during daylight hours on Sunday, Dec. 19, in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way. The break-in occurred while the residents were absent, sometime between 11:40 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. An unknown suspect broke into the house through the dog door attachment at the sliding glass door and stole two laptops along with various pieces of jewelry. Fingerprints were taken from a $1,000 bill box and beverage and wine glasses handled by the thief.

Dec. 13

Hit and run: The driver’s door of a vehicle parked in the Community Center at Mercer View lot on S.E. 24th Street was damaged in a hit-and-run incident while the driver was inside the CCMV around 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 14

Pedestrians hit: Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle at 4:41 p.m. in the Walgreens parking lot on S.E. 27th Street. The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old girl, was attempting to park while the pedestrians were returning to their car. She struck one of the pedestrians, age 12, a second time with the front left tire while backing up. The youth, who was with a 42-year-old man, suffered head trauma and an ankle injury. No other injuries were reported.

Burglary: $63 in cash was stolen from Emmanuel Episcopal Church on 86th Avenue S.E. after three file cabinets were pried open by an unknown suspect in the church offices. The theft occurred sometime after Dec. 10 and was reported at 9:20 a.m. There was no evidence of forced entry into the offices.

Fraud: A 61-year-old resident of 93rd Avenue S.E. reported unauthorized charges on his credit card at 1:11 p.m. The card was fraudulently used on Dec. 5.

Theft: A 20-year-old Mercer Island woman’s debit card was stolen out of her purse, at her residence on S.E. 75th Place, sometime during the evening. The suspect is a 19-year-old female, an estranged friend who had once stolen the victim’s ID card.

Dec. 15

Arrest: Police arrested a Seattle woman, 29, at 7:55 p.m. in the 8600 block of North Mercer Way. The woman, who had a suspended license, was driving a BMW with expired tabs and a tail light out.

Dec. 16

Lost package: A Christmas package containing a children’s toy was found at 3:16 p.m. at the intersection of S.E. 36th Street and East Mercer Way. The package was placed into found property at the MIPD.

Fraud: A Mercer Island man, 83, wired $6,000 to Australia before discovering it was fraud. He had received a call from a scammer impersonating his grandson while the grandson was away at school. The unknown suspect said he needed money for legal fees after getting into legal trouble.

Dec. 17

Suspicious substance: Bellevue Bomb Squad personnel were called to Youth Theatre Northwest on S.E. 40th Street after hazmat crews came across two bottles of liquid containing suspicious substances. The crews were disposing of old chemistry class chemicals in storage behind the theater. One of the bottles, labeled “Nitro Glycerin,” was destroyed, and police took possession of the other bottle for destruction.

Dec. 18

Accident: A vehicle struck a tree at 1 a.m. beside the intersection of S.E. 40th Street and 78th Avenue S.E. The vehicle, a Honda SUV, went off the road after turning left off of 78th Avenue. The noise from the collision prompted a woman to come out of her residence nearby, and she found two young males inside the car, both of whom fled before police arrived. The woman said the driver smelled like alcohol. The vehicle’s front end was extensively damaged, and the car was towed from the scene.

Dec. 19

Arrest: Police arrested an Auburn woman, 26, at 12:43 a.m. on eastbound I-90, and the vehicle was left to a passenger. The woman was driving with a suspended license and five counts of Failure To Appear on record.

DUI: Police stopped a speeding vehicle at 1:29 a.m. on westbound I-90 at the Island Crest Way off-ramp. The driver, a 25-year-old man with a Joint Base Lewis-McChord address, had been drinking and failed standard field sobriety tests. He was released to a sober adult after his arrest.

Dec. 20

Malicious mischief: Three teenagers were arrested at 4 a.m. in the 7000 block of 78th Avenue S.E for DUI, vandalizing Christmas lights and decorations, mailboxes, planter boxes, garbage cans and a flagpole, stealing an American flag. Police responded to multiple reports of suspicious activity and property damage and stopped the teens’ vehicle while it was leaving the neighborhood. The driver and passengers admitted to the damage and drinking alcohol.

Theft: An iPhone was stolen from a Kirkland man in the south end QFC on S.E. 68th Street during the lunch hour. The phone, worth $400, was stolen while the man’s back was turned as he was getting soup at the deli.

Car prowl: A Mercer Island woman, 23, found two male teenagers inside her car — surrounded by 10 other boys — at 8:23 p.m. in the Island Square parking garage at street level in the 2700 block of 78th Avenue S.E. They disbanded after the woman approached them and asked what they were doing. The two teenagers came out, claiming “they were just checking out” the Subaru, and then got into a sedan. Fingerprints were taken.

Dec. 21

Arrest: Police stopped a vehicle with expired tabs and a forged trip permit displayed in the rear window at 3:52 p.m. in the 7600 block of S.E. 27th Street. The driver, a 52-year-old Seattle man, was arrested. He was driving with a suspended license and had a report of sale past 45 days with five counts of Failure To Appear on record.

Malicious mischief: Four vehicles were spraypainted white during the evening in the 3600 block of 80th Avenue S.E. Red graffiti was spraypainted in the Homestead Field restrooms around the same time.

Dec. 22

DUI: Police arrested an Issaquah woman, 21, at 2:12 a.m. on eastbound I-90 for driving under the influence of alcohol. Her vehicle was impounded.

Malicious mischief: Ten to 15 street signs were pulled out of the ground and broken off at ground level sometime overnight. The signs — stop, no parking and school zone — were left at Mercer Island High School on S.E. 42nd Street.

Damaged mailbox: An East Mercer Way resident reported at 10:42 a.m. that the lock of her neighbor’s roadside mailbox was damaged by an unknown suspect sometime after Dec. 18. The neighbor was away from town.
