VFW Post 5760 has received the John Spellman Award for exemplary achievement in historic preservation. The project, the VFW Hall or Keewaydin Clubhouse, across the street from the Roanoke Inn on 72nd Avenue S.E., was one of four to receive a 2013 award. Post 5760 is being recognized in the stewardship category for “exceptional work to preserve and maintain Mercer Island’s historic Keewaydin Clubhouse.”

Islander and Post Commander Frank Sorba will receive the award on behalf of the Post and those who have contributed to preserve and enhance the building over the past several years.

“I want to acknowledge that this award would not be possible had it not been for the work accomplished by previous Post Commanders Bob Brahm and Gary Winterstein, and for all the generous contribution made to the post through Operation Restoration,” he said.

Others involved included Erick and July Leithe and  Jim and Rosie Seeks, of Seeks Design Associates, historic preservation and restoration consultants.

The award will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on April 23, at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. It will be preceded by a reception at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.
