Mercer Island Police are looking for a suspect who carjacked a Bellevue man on Mercer Island early Saturday morning.

Around 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, Mercer Island Police patrol units were dispatched to a carjacking that occurred in the 3000 block of 80th Ave SE, the police department reported in a press release.

The Bellevue man, who is in his late 60s and operates a small business in Seattle, had just finished transferring items from a work vehicle to his private vehicle on Mercer Island when he was knocked to the ground, causing lacerations and abrasions to his elbow and knee.

The suspect, described as a short Hispanic male wearing a hoodie, then drove off in the victim’s vehicle.

Officers used cellphone-tracking software on the victim’s phones and located the stolen vehicle, and other personnel property, abandoned in the 4000 block of East Mercer Way. Sergeant Jeff Magnan reported that from early investigation, it appeared the suspect took an undetermined amount of the business’ cash from three moneybags, which were in the victim vehicle prior to abandoning it on the side of the road.

The victim vehicle was processed for latent evidence and detectives are following up on leads, with no additional information available at this time.

To call in a tip, contact Sergeant Jeff Magnan of the Mercer Island Police Department at 206-275-7910 or the Crime Tip Line by dialing 206-275-7955.
