Community conversation about diversity, equity and inclusion set for Feb. 2

The Mercer Island High School Black Student Union will present the community conversation Towards Inclusive Community at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 over Zoom.

In partnership with the city of Mercer Island, Do The Work MI, ONE MI and the Stroum Jewish Community Center, the conversation will focus on “the history of segregation and racial covenants on Mercer Island and steps we can take to build more inclusive neighborhoods,” reads an event announcement inspired by Richard Rothstein’s book, “The Color of Law.”

King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci and members of the Black Student Union will speak during the introduction. Invited guests include scholars from the University of Washington Seattle Civil Rights & Labor History Project, and Monty Smith from John L. Scott Real Estate. Jennifer Flood will moderate the conversation.

In November of 2021, the Mercer Island City Council voted to set aside funds to collaborate with ONE MI and Do the Work MI to plan and present the Community Conversation series focused on diversity, equity and inclusion throughout 2022.
