The City of Mercer Island, along with the Green Ribbon Commission, IslandVision and the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, is reaching out to Island businesses to promote green business practices that will help the environment and make good business sense. The group has sent out information and surveys to businesses that helps them identify ways to become greener — and actions they have already taken that could qualify their business to be designated as a “Mercer Island Green Business.” Businesses can be “certified” in several areas. According to Assistant City Manager James Mason, the effort is a collaboration with town businesses to find ways to promote simple yet effective methods to recycle and reduce waster, save energy, limit pollutants and conserve water. The packet delivered to Island businesses also offers a resource guide, tips and contacts for business owners and operators to get help and ideas.
