Gun concerns lead to police pursuit

Young Islanders crash on 72nd Avenue S.E. after speeding away from MIPD; gun turns out to be a toy.

The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) detained three suspects at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night on First Hill. Their car was speeding up the hill at an estimated speed of 50 miles per hour before the driver lost control and crashed into a vehicle, a residence and a utility pole at the corner of 72nd Avenue S.E. and S.E. 24th Street.

Police started pursuing the vehicle as it was driving away from the Town Center area. A citizen reported seeing a male subject in a darked-out sedan playing with a gun in the waistband of his pants in the McDonald’s parking lot. An officer saw a vehicle matching the description leave the Tabit Square parking lot, and pursued it up the hill before the driver attempted a right turn at 72nd Avenue S.E. and crashed.

The gun turned out to be a toy, which was recovered by police. All kids involved were Mercer Island residents. The driver was charged with reckless driving.
