Members of the Islander Middle School wrestling team finished off their season with a win at the varsity Foothills league championship finals in the middle of January.

Members of the Islander Middle School wrestling team finished off their season with a win at the varsity Foothills league championship finals in the middle of January. The team finished the season with a 6-1 record, recording their first loss in the regular season in four years.

The loss to Maywood Middle School was avenged at the league championships when the Gators won the league title with a 106-91 score to beat Maywood.

Seven individual team members won titles at the league event. They include: Trevor Gullstad in the 95 weight class, Dominic Giampapa at 100; Scott Lee in the 105 division, Taylan Yuasa in the 110 division, Evan Condon at 145 and Preston Melick in the heavy weight division. Jack Vassau took second place overall in the 130 division.

Gullstad and Yuasa completed their final season of middle school wrestling undefeated and defended their weight division titles for the second year.

The team’s captain included Gullstad, Yuasa, Lee and Vassau.

The Gator team included 30 wrestlers on the JV and varsity teams, coached by Ryan Hoisington, John Frazier, Jim Richards and Elliott Powell. According to Frazier 10 years ago, when the team first began, only nine team members turned out.
