Mercer Island girls place ninth at state meet | State track and field

Sophomore Kayla Lee reaches podium in two events at state meet

The Mercer Island girls track and field team earned a top ten showing at the 3A state championships, placing ninth at the meet, which took place May 26-28 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Mercer Island sophomore Kayla Lee reached the medal stand in two events, placing second in the 200 meter dash (25.35) and third in the 400 (56.91). Lee was half of a second behind Chief Sealth’s Assa Kaba in the 200 and one second behind 400 winner Lani Taylor of West Seattle.

Mercer Island’s Mathilda Noone, Piper Casey, Ella Hensey and Lee placed third in the 4×400 meter relay at 3:57.41.

Also competing at the state meet was the 4×200 meter relay team of Eliza Crenshaw, Casey, Victoria Gersch and Lee, and the 4×100 meter relay team of Crenshaw, Ashley Rudd, Katie McCormick and Casey.

The Mercer Island boys had two representatives at the state championships. Emerson Schulz competed in the 400 meter dash, placing ninth in Friday’s preliminaries. Dylan Majewski competed in shot put, placing 12th.
